# Reception
I think that the Cannes Cut of [[Southland Tales]] would be received much better today than it was back in 2006.
- The trend at the time was for shorter movies and that trend has reversed in the last few years.
- A lot of people felt that it's theme of terrorism was "too soon" to make a dark satire about. Now I can hardly go a day without seeing a joke about some national tragedy.
- In that era, it was still quite a touchy subject to criticize the PATRIOT Act. But as we've seen in the years since, it was prescient.
- Surreal and absurd films have been blockbusters, particularly those of Christopher Nolan and The Daniels. I feel that audiences would feel less out of their depth due to media literacy.
Is this just a long winded way to say it was ahead of its time? Yes, pretty much.
# Differences
The changes are many, and while there are large changes there are also many smaller ones.
Changes from the Cannes Cut to the [[Southland Tales Theatrical Cut]]:
- The mattes/greenscreen edges were improved dramatically, particularly in the Panopticon and megazeppelin
- The television UI was changed to be more colorful and reorganized
- `USIDentelevision`
- TV commercials that were mundane or contemporary were removed in favor of newsreels, atomic test footage, or exposition, and scrolling through the channels no longer changed the channel until selected
- The Krysta Now show's opening was trimmed
- Krysta calling Fortunio as asshole was removed
- During the raid, the UPU3 SWAT team no longer reports about the mole or cache of severed thumbs, Nana Mae and Starla's reactions to this are also cut
- Kenny now says "Nana Mae can eat a fucking dick."
