# Notability
Traveller is one of the earliest [[Tabletop Games|TTRPG]]s, originally released in 1977 by [[Game Designers Workshop]].
## Versions
Like any classic TTRPG, there are many versions and offshoots. But unlike those other games, there have been two publishers releasing their own independent editions of the game with the same name in parallel for over 15 years.
### Classic Traveller
The OG. Written primarily by [[Marc Miller]] along with a few other people. The 1981 version is freely available in a scanned format with inserted errata.
### T5
Developed by the original author, [[Marc Miller]].
- [Website](https://traveller5.net/) ([[Traveller 5]], [[Far Future Enterprises]])
Described an an "encyclopedia" and extremely heavy on the crunch. So much so that there's no real campaign material in the core books. Seems to be a good set of reference tables and generation info and fallback rules but perhaps not ideal standalone.

### Mongoose Traveller

Names its editions after years. Currently in the 2022 version. Has a very active forum. Some people complain that the editing of the books are terrible. Mongoose apparently bought the IP from Marc in 2023.

### Cepheus Engine
- [SRD](https://www.orffenspace.com/cepheus-srd/introduction.html)
An offshoot of Mongoose Traveller 1E's SRD from 2008 combined with several other bits from other related OGL SRDs.
Seems to have the most comprehensive SRD by far and while people are upset that the PDF version doesn't have bookmarks and hyperlinks, the online version seems well liked.

There are also many other derivatives of Cepheus by other publishers, such as [Cepheus Universal](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/469431/cepheus-universal) (generic scifi), [Clement Sector](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/380657/clement-sector-third-edition) (setting and rules), and [Zaibatsu](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/234679/zaibatsu) (cyberpunk).
### Nomad
- [Website](https://stellagamapublishing.co/)
More of a spiritual successor with its own (but similar) dice mechanic released under the [[CC BY 4.0]] license.

# Mechanics
## Dice System
It is based around piles of `d6`s.
## Turns
A round in T5 is one minute. Which is pretty interesting I think.
## Related
Traveller supported multiple different standalone systems for space combat, including Mayday, Brilliant Lances and Battle Rider.
# Setting
- No FTL communications!
