# Walter Mung | Attributes | | | ------------------ | ------------------------------- | | Name | Walter Mung | | 2005 Draft Name | (same) | | Undated Draft Name | Rashad Avraham | | Alter Egos | The Armorer, The Pale Horse | | Age | 50 | | Actor | [[Christopher Lambert]] | | Profession | Local Arms Dealer | | Affiliations | [[Neo-Marxists]] (loosely?) | | Children | [[Veronica]] (in some versions) | > Revelation 6:8 - And behold a pale horse. And he who sat on it, his name was Death. \- [[Pilot]]'s narration introducing Walter > Get the fuck out of my ice cream truck, you Cro-Magnon bitch. \- Walter to [[Zora]] Walter is a small time arms dealer that operates out of an ice cream truck. Context cues indicate that he is another war veteran. # Events - Sells blanks and an "UPU 9" (probably just a 9mm pistol with the standard [[UPU]] modifications, as it looks the same as the one used by [[Bart]]) to [[Zora]]. - Kidnaps [[Roland]] - Gives the rocket launcher to [[Martin]] # Issues He retains the last name "Mung" in the credits to the released film. So it's weird when he smirks when [[Veronica]]'s death is mentioned on TV in the film without comment. Especially since he's supposed to be her dad according to earlier drafts. There is no dialogue about the sale of the "UPU 9" and [[Zora]] only asks for blanks. # Cannes Cut [[Pilot]]'s narration specifically calls him "Walter Mung" and a "rogue Neo-Marxist". This narration wasn't used in the [[Southland Tales Theatrical Cut]], it was replaced with the "pale horse" quote instead. Walter says that he has a minimum buy price of $500 when [[Zora]] tries to buy only the blanks. They compromise on $400 when [[Zora]] agrees to buy a pistol as well. # 2005 Draft In the [[Southland Tales 2005 Draft|2005 Draft]], Walter is [[Veronica]]'s dad. He is heartbroken by her death. This motivates him to kidnap [[Roland|David Clark]], as he blames the [[The Lighthouse Gang|the acting troupe]] for his daughter's death. # Undated Draft ## Rashad Avraham In the [[Southland Tales Undated Draft|Undated Draft]], the Armorer with the ice cream truck is a man named "Rashad Avraham", and has a significant role throughout the script. Much the remaining dialogue is identical to what was filmed, although the origin of the "rocket launcher" is Saudi Arabia instead of Syria, and the store he references is "K-Mart" instead of "Wal-Mart" (retained in the [[#Cannes Cut]]), both changes which were introduced in the [[Southland Tales 2005 Draft|2005 Draft]]. His girlfriend is [[Veronica|Angela Alexander]]. He has been supporting her music/acting career by selling guns. He kidnaps [[Roland]] because [[Zora]]'s check bounces and he uses him as a hostage in the holes of getting paid. After Angela is killed he gets drunk and this is how he ends up slamming the ice cream truck into the ATM. ## Walter Mung In the [[Southland Tales Undated Draft|Undated Draft]], Walter Mung is a vagrant that says prophetic things and gets into the gunfight during the end, primarily with the Angelic Cult (not present in later drafts). In the film, the vagrants are still a major presence at the end and join in the gunfight with the police, but have no speaking lines. # IRL ## Actor Originally, actor Tim Blake Nelson was attached to the film. If I had to guess, based on the earlier drafts, he was the original actor chosen to play Walter, and [[Christopher Lambert]] took over the role due to scheduling conflicts. The only other role I could think of for Nelson is [[Teena|Stan MacArthur]], whose character was dropped sometime between the [[Southland Tales 2005 Draft]] and principle photography. Blake is still thanked in the credits.
