Joplin is a mixed [[AGPLv3]] and [[Source Available]] personal-use licensed knowledge management and note taking app written in [[Typescript]]. - [Website](https://joplinapp.org/) - [Source](https://github.com/laurent22/joplin) - Documentation - [AlternativeTo](https://alternativeto.net/software/joplin/about/) > Images, videos, PDFs and audio files are supported. Create math expressions and diagrams directly from the app. Take photos with the mobile app and save them to a note. \- official website # Notability It's a knowledge management app. ## Criticism It just doesn't look very good. It's got that 2012 Evernote look with some Gnome styling to round it out. I don't feel great seeing how they promote that it is open source but hide that the server is not. Others do this as well and its bullshit. # Philosophy ## Pricing It is ~$60/yr (as of [[2024-02-05]]) for: - Syncing - 200MB per note - 30GB storage - Publishing - Web clipper (not sure if this is limited to subscriptions) - Notebook sharing and collaboration - Email to note It is instead ~$80/yr for user management support, per user. Overall I don't have an issue with this business model. ## Client Licensing Fully copyleft under [[AGPLv3]]. ## Server Licensing The server is available under a [[Source Available]] non-free "Personal Use" license. > Unless authorised by the Licensor in writing, the Software may be used for personal non-commercial purposes only. Considerably heavier and more confusing than the [[AFFiNE]] license, despite being technically more "free". # Platform Support # Features ## Missing Features - It doesn't have a fully integrated "live" editor - You have either [[Markdown]] source or web preview - There is a "rich text" mode, but most plugins only work in Markdown mode - All kinds of weird limitations that other apps (like [[Obsidian Editor]]) don't have # Tips # References - https://github.com/laurent22/joplin/blob/dev/packages/server/LICENSE.md - https://joplinapp.org/help/apps/rich_text_editor/
