> Icaros Desktop is an Amiga-like operating system for the PC platform, with a full desktop environment, distributed on a bootable media. It's based on AROS, a lightweight, efficient and flexible open-source operating system, aiming at being compatible with AmigaOS 3 at the API level, while improving on it in many areas. Icaros Desktop runs native AROS applications but also the original Amiga ones under emulation, transparently integrating them onto its desktop.
# Notability
# Philosophy
Based on [[AROS]] (hence the name) which is compatible with [[Amiga OS]].
## Development
Development is ongoing but "slow".
However the primary maintainer seems to have run into some kind of hosting issue. He had been using Blogspot (I think) for 15 years and then something happened and the download pages were taken down, apparently by Google. The files are available still and the site is up, it was just that download page. There are a variety of other issues with the site, likely due to its age.
The link in the header points to the forum where the download links are hosted now.
## License
The "AROS License" is a particularly arcane set of legalese but appears to be somewhere between the GPL and Apache licenses. It has a very specific patent grant and requires that changes and their source code are made public.
I don't see any obvious limitations which would prevent it from being classified as "open source" by the OSI, but I'm also not surprised that this one-off license isn't in their list either.
