# Notability
I used CryEngine for some experiments in 2016, it had some powerful tools but was also extremely jank.
[[Open 3D Engine]] is a sister engine which split off of the CryEngine tree at v4 in 2016.
# Philosophy
CryTek has not been a very stable organization and nearly went out of business in 2014-2016. They changed their payment model several times and now ([[2023-09-12]]) they operate on the same system as Unreal Engine.
They pulled a lot of features slated for CryEngine 5.7 instead saying that they would be included with CryEngine 6 - which has not been officially announced or released yet as far as I can tell. I would be wary of them until they make the announcement as I suspect license terms will change with this new version as well.
They litigated against Cloud Imperium Games who have been "developing" Star Citizen but decided to announce other projects without paying new licensing fees. They settled out of court.

## Scripting
Has a visual flow scripting environment called "[Flow Graph](https://docs.cryengine.com/display/CEMANUAL/Flow+Graph)".
They are also working on a new visual scripting tool called [Schematyc](https://docs.cryengine.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=36868211) that seems to be inspired by Unreal Engine's Blueprint.
