[TextMate](https://macromates.com/) was released in 2004 and was one of the first code editors I used professionally on the Mac operating system before moving to [[Vim|Vim]]. When the first version came out it changed the landscape and it influenced every code editor that came after - and even those that came before. # History However, by 2008 development had pretty much stalled. And a lot of developers wanted something for other operating systems. [[Sublime Text|Sublime Text]] picked up from TextMate in 2008 on Windows and was eventually ported to OS X. TextMate v2 was supposedly under development, but wouldn't see an alpha release until 2011. Eventually the code would be [released under GPLv3 on Github](https://github.com/textmate/textmate) and later essentially abandoned.
