[[2023-06-02 - After a Night's Sleep|<- previous day]] At least, I hope it is a day of planning. These titles are (currently) set at note creation and are aspirational. At this point though i haven't left the house and it's after 4pm so i am overdue for breakfast - late night [[2023-06-02 - After a Night's Sleep|penne carbonara]] or no. So ... Cat cafe maybe? ![[IMG_20230603_170848.jpg]] Unfortunately they close early so i only had time for a quick drink and pastry, onward to find real food. Pictures of cats are only on film right now, but maybe I'll be back. I decided on a bar called Bastards because it was close by and looked dimly lit (and from what I could tell didn't serve [whale](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/mar/28/meet-us-dont-eat-us-how-iceland-is-turning-tourists-from-whale-eaters-to-whale-watchers) but instead i walked well past it following the view of the mountains across the bay. ![[IMG_20230603_173349__01.jpg]] I only brought my film camera with me on this excursion and was kicking myself for not having brought the wide angle lens because "i aM iN tHe cItY". I'll clearly have to go back and swap lenses later. After this detour i finally made it back to Bastards where i had a couple of prawn tacos. The two tables to my right started talking and turned out they were both from PNW. The various concentrations of locals vs tourists at different places has been interesting. The cat cafe seemed to be mostly locals as was Gaukurinn last night and the outdoor shop. Walking around last night i heard a lot of Polish and unmistakable Polish accents among staff as several places which makes sense as that demographic is the largest minority population in Iceland. Hearing people switch between Icelandic, Polish, and English depending on the sentence is very entertaining. It seems to me that Icelandic first language speakers have less of an accent than other Scandinavians, that flatter "un-bounciness" of Icelandic probably helps here as well as having a lot of overlap in phonetics and (perhaps most importantly) early ESL schooling. I also want to point out that they are using GA rather than RP. NA is also a good fit because of the more clipped syllables. I ended up at a bar, got some shrimp tacos, drinking negronis - they had some barrel aged negronis that were muah deliciouso. There was an ebb and flow of people to the table to my left, young men that were absolutely wasted. They were so drunk that I couldn't really make heads or tails of their speech, but I'm thinking Polish because of a variety of little things that reminded me of people I've known in Chicago. At one point everyone had run off (restroom? smoke? other bars? who knows!) except one guy and he was just staring off into space when CLUNK he dropped his phone and it hit the table leg on its way down. I glanced at him and at the phone and he just did not move. So I go, "Uh, you dropped your phone." "What?" me: "Your phone? You dropped it?" "I dropped my phone, you don't say! Where you from, you not from here?" me: "Nope, not from here." "Why you come here?" me: "I literally don't remember, Maybe I was drunk too?" "This godforsaken island." me: "Then go somewhere else?" Right then, a gaggle of his friends returned, he kept looking back at me but his drunk brain eventually forgot I existed when I stopped making eye contact. Woooo. That's a lot of drunk. I'm really curious though if that was just the drink talking or if he had some legitimate points of complaint. Maybe he just doesn't like the cold or weird daylight/nighttime cycles. Ah well. But really, even talking to him it was hard to tell through the slurring what his accent might be. Either way, I was definitely impressed that he was able to speak at least 2 languages, maybe 3, while that wasted. [[2023-06-04 - I ain't planning for shit|next day ->]]
