During the colonial era they typically allied with the British against the French. During the [[American Revolution]], they continued to support the British, so [[George Washington]] launched a campaign of retaliation that destroyed about fifty Cayuga towns (earning Washington the name "Town-Destroyer" in their language). Survivors fled to Canada and after the war the [Central New York Military Tract](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_New_York_Military_Tract "Central New York Military Tract") was established to distribute Cayuga land to veterans.
