[Norse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norsemen) settlement at the northern tip of [[Newfoundland]], providing proof of pre-Columbian European contact with the Americas. Carbon dating shows the settlement was consistent with accounts of [[Leif Eriksson]]'s attempted settlement of Vinland around 1000 CE. Archaeologists have found eight wood-framed, sod-covered buildings and over 800 Norse objects including blacksmith tools and parts of a loom. Based on the sizes of the structures, the settlement could have accommodated up to 160 people. But since animal pens were not found and the stories in the _[Saga of Erik the Red](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saga_of_Erik_the_Red)_ describe the Vikings having cattle in their settlement, perhaps this was only an outpost of Vinland and the main settlement has not yet been discovered.
