A Spanish labor system established by the [New Laws](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Laws) of 1542, after the end of the [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Encomienda]] in Spanish America and the Philippines. Similar to the [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Mita]] of the [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Inca Empire]], the *repartimiento* was a labor draft rather than slavery. Workers were paid a wage which they could use to pay their tribute to the colonial governor.
