A band of the [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Wampanoag]] confederation who lived in the area that the [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Pilgrim|Pilgrims]] settled in and named [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Plymouth]]. When the English [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Separatist|Separatists]] arrived at [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Cape Cod]] in 1620, the Patuxet were nearly all dead, having been struck down in one or more pandemics during the previous couple of years. The only survivor was [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Squanto]], who had been kidnapped years before and taken to Europe to be [[Slavery|enslaved]]. Escaping, he had made his way to England and ultimately had returned home to find his people all dead. Since Squanto had learned English and had grown up in the Patuxet village, [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Massasoit]] assigned him to live with the Pilgrims and help them survive.
