Northeastern region of the United States. Originally bordered by [[New France]] to the north and [[New Netherland]] to the south. Named New England in 1616 by [[HISTORY Teaching Content/US 1/Topic Index/Captain John Smith]]. Included the [[Plymouth|Plymouth Plantation]], [[Massachusetts Bay Colony]], [[Rhode Island]], [[Connecticut]], and [[New Hampshire]]. [[Lumber/Maine]] was originally a province of Massachusetts and [[Vermont]] was a chaotic region that retained its autonomy and was not one of the original thirteen colonies that formed the United States. It did not join the union until 1791, actually.
