After sending [Samoset](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samoset) and [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Squanto]] to meet the newcomers in early 1621, Massasoit made a lasting alliance with them and sent Squanto to live among the Pilgrims. His peaceful approach helped the Pilgrim colony survive. His son [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Metacomet|Metacom]] would lead the bloodiest Indian war in New England history.
