Indigenous people who lived in the region of Delaware Bay, New Jersey, and New York. Called the Delaware by the French, they are probably the people who "sold" Manhattan to [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Notes to Fill/Peter Minuit]], although the island was at the edge of their territory and they probably did not live there on a regular basis. The Lenape were also the people William Penn negotiate with in Pennsylvania, although he seems to have been more aware of the differences in the ways the English and Native Americans understood their relationships to land.
