(970s to 1025) Known as Leif the Lucky, Norse explorer who established the settlement known as [[Vinland]] in North America, about 1000 CE. Leif was probably born in [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Iceland]], but would have lived in [[Greenland]] as a boy, when his father [[Erik the Red]] was leader of the Norse settlement there.
Leif has been commemorated in statues in Saint Paul, Minnesota; Seattle, Washington, Boston, Massachusetts; and Reykjavik, Iceland.
