A 315-mile river that flows from the Adirondack Mountains in New York to the Atlantic at New York City. The river runs through the homelands of the [Munsee](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munsee), [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Lenape]], [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Mohican]], [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Mohawk]], and [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Iroquois|Haudenosaunee]] peoples. The first European to visit it was [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Henry Hudson]], after whom it is now named. It had previously been seen by [Giovanni da Verrazzano](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giovanni_da_Verrazzano), sailing for France in 1524, but he considered it an estuary. The Dutch sailed up it to [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Albany]] where they established [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Notes to Fill/New Netherland]], calling it the North River.
