Huáscar was supported by the nobles of Cusco, but Atahualpa received help from [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Pizarro|Francisco Pizarro]], who arrived in Peru in early 1531 with fewer than two hundred fighting men. With Pizarro's help, Atahualpa assassinated his brother and proclaimed himself king. But after paying Pizarro a ransom of over 13,000 pounds of gold and twice that much in silver, Atahualpa was executed and the Inca dynasty came to an end.
