Acquired by the British during the [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/French and Indian War]] and then taken by militia and the [[Green Mountain Boys]] under the command of [[Benedict Arnold]] and [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Notes to Fill/Ethan Allen]] in May 1775. [[Henry Knox]] then transported its artillery to assist in the [[Siege of Boston]]. The fort was abandoned in 1777 when General [John Burgoyne](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Burgoyne) threatened it from higher ground, and the British abandoned it on 1781 after Burgoyne was defeated in the [Battles of Saratoga](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saratoga_campaign).
