A Protestant denomination that grew out of the English Separatist movement in the 17th century. The first Baptist church and congregation in America was founded by [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Roger Williams]] in Providence Rhode Island in 1638. The First [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Great Awakening]] energized the Baptist movement, especially among enslaved Africans in the South.
The current Providence church building was constructed in 1774 with the help of shipbuilders from Boston who were out of work after the closing of the Boston Harbor following the [[Boston Tea Party|Tea Party]].
