
(1502-1533) Last native ruler of the [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Inca Empire]]. Son of [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Huayna Capac]], who died in 1525 of smallpox along with his chosen successor. Atahulapa fought a civil war for the succession against his older brother, [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Huáscar]]. [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Pizarro|Francisco Pizarro]] invaded South America in 1531 and with Pizarro's help, Atahualpa assassinated his brother and proclaimed himself king. But after paying Pizarro a ransom of over 13,000 pounds of gold and twice that much in silver, Atahualpa was executed, ending native rule in what became the [Viceroyalty of Peru](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viceroyalty_of_Peru).
