![undefined](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f9/Gwash_map01.jpg) *In this sketch by George Washington, the Allegheny River is named Ohio.* A 325 mile tributary of the [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Ohio River]], beginning in [Allegany Township, Pennsylvania](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegany_Township,_Pennsylvania) and flowing west and north into New York before turning south and joining with the Monongahela River to form the Ohio at Pittsburgh. Allegheny comes from [[Dan's History Web/US 1/Topic Index/Lenape]] *welhik hane*, meaning "beautiful stream". Similarly, Ohio is [[Seneca]] for "river beautiful", and native peoples considered both rivers to be the same -- as did [[George Washington]] when he surveyed the region.
