> [!INFO] Tags > #toDocument # Overview Lightburn is specifically made for running laser cutters but it houses many powerful tools to create, modify, and repair different images and file types. We'll walk you through a basic project here to get you familiar but there are plenty of super cool things you can do with the machine. Check out the #machine/LaserCutter tag to see projects made with our laser cutters for design instructions and inspirations. **You can import files for cutting as either `.DXF` or `.SVG` files and engraving can be any raster file like `.jpg` or `.png`.** > [!NOTE] File Types > If you're unsure about the difference between vector and raster files, please read the following article by [Adobe: Raster vs Vector](https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud/file-types/image/comparison/raster-vs-vector.html) # Sample Project Walkthrough ## Sample File [Thunderworks Gear Logo](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RELiUNoQKHkOdYXsXt0Tbeoyq5VNWQS1/view?usp=drive_link) Download this file from here. You'll notice that this is a `.dxf` file. This means it's an Autodesk AutoCAD file. This is a type of vector file that saves things like layers, colors, and more. When you put it in Lightburn, it will strip most of that information but will keep layers as different colors inside the software. ## Processing The most important thing we're doing in Lightburn is telling the software what we want the laser to do to the various parts of the file. We have to tell it power and speed settings for it to achieve the final product that we want. **Our goal with this file is to make a 2" coin cutout with the Thunderworks logo engraved into the center.** - Drag your file into Lightburn and use the `Ungroup` tool to break apart the lines.![[Screenshot 2025-08-12 145520.png|normal|328]] - Notice you have two colors, these show in the right panel. You can change these by selecting the desired lines and clicking on one of the colors in the bottom left of the software. ![[Screenshot 2025-08-12 134325.png|normal]] - Set the settings as the following with your inner shape is the color set to `Fill` and your outline is the `Line` color. ![[Screenshot 2025-08-12 133553.png|normal|328]] - `Send` the file as "LIGHTBRN", and confirm you want to overwrite the file on the laser. ![[Screenshot 2025-08-12 133613.png|normal|200]]![[Screenshot 2025-08-12 133619.png|normal|200]]![[Screenshot 2025-08-12 133625.png|normal|200]] ## Continue to [[3 - CO2_Laser_Controls]]
