Outline Canvas: ![[Outline For RES.canvas]] This is a thought experiment, and the opinions are my own. Should we fear Artificial Intelligence? I think there is a case to be made in saying yes. However, if we take all of the science fiction about this subject, bundle it up, and wring it out, I think we'll find two results extrapolated from that process: In a few years, we will either be the servants of AI or it will happily serve us in ways we never thought possible. # Emergent Layers of Resting Complexity If you took someone from the 15th century and placed them in front of a Commadore 64, they might be able to work out the concept that this device correlated to the alphabet, but the operation of the device would be lost to them as it it probably would be for the most part to a teenager in 2023. There are some levels of complexity that are left to the technician. There are some subprocesses meant to be understood by those who's job it is to seek the next level. In a recent, criticized tweet by Lex Fridman, he stated: Humans are an API to ChatGPT. ChatGPT is an API to Python. Python is an API to C. C is an API to assembly. Assembly is an API to binary. Binary is an API to physics. Physics is an API to the machine that runs the universe. It's computation all the way down. While Lex overestimated the layman and dumbed down a complex concept to the engineer, I think this sums up something that we all know to be true. No one has to pay attention to a system and its parts to start using the system, otherwise we would have a hard time breathing as we had to worry about every alveoli inflating one-by-one. It would make driving a car more stressful as we had to compress each piston with a dashboard of buttons overhead as we drove to the corner store. ![[bobbyhiddn_A_man_operating_a_car_as_he_presses_a_dozens_buttons_a9a9b39d-b741-4091-9119-cf843d475f7b.png]] We live in a modern world of emergent layers of resting complexity. The true problems occur when the complexities bring themselves to our awareness. When an error message appears listing codes that seem to be a jumbled mix of numbers and letters in no discernable pattern. When a car's brakes fail and the engine continues to whir, the combination can result in a much less restful result, especially when the failures compound with other cars as they collide. Systems can explode when placed under too much pressure. There are levels of complexity that most people have no need or desire to study. At the same time, all modern convention and comfortability is derived from the fact that we tapped into something ancient, powerful, primal, and tamed it to our will. That is at least the assumption.
