### Mark 15_33-36 - The Light Leaves > [!Bible] [Mark 15:33-39 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/41/15/) > 33. And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. > 34. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” > 35. And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” > 36. And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” > 37. And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. > 38. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. > 39. And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” *The light of the world was leaving. It was dark. Absent of light. The Father turned His face away. He had to go to the places no man could go to grab the keys of hell and bring them back up. Imagine feeling victory only to hear the chains wrench open under the force of the Creator. What chains could hold Him? *Even still, the Father looked away. The Psalmist told us of the anguish Jesus experienced in this moment. > [!Bible] [Psalm 22:1-2 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/19/22/) > 1. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? > 2. O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest. *I'm interested to know who thought He was calling for Elijah. Maybe the Romans? If they were Jews, wouldn't they understand Him? Or was it just to say that they weren't paying any attention to what was actually happening? They had no precedent for a Messiah that would plan for His own betrayal. > [!Bible] [Mark 15:36 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/41/15/) > 36. And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” *I wonder if this was genuine. If so, what a cruel thing to wonder. Let us let Him suffer in hope that we will see a miracle.
