# Map out your route > Alas, there is no fixing of man’s position in the system of the heavens, anymore than one can fix the position of a skiff at sea. Alas, yes, alas; but also, avanti! > > from “Eve in Hollywood” in _Table for Two_ by Amor Towles Now that you've defined the main qualities of your action path (even loosely!), it's time to map out where you specifically want to go. The purpose of your map is to help you visualize the major checkpoints that ultimately help you complete the action you want to take; you can break them down later. Think of these steps as a paper map you might use on a road trip; we're not documenting every fork in every dirt road. We just want to be able to see the main stops on the way to your final destination. You can do this with index cards (my preference, so I can quickly move things around, and then ultimately put them on my wall), a whiteboard, a giant piece of paper, or software (like Miro, which I used to create the example below). Whatever you use, create a "card" for each practical step you've defined, and lay them out in order. I like to lay one card down and the next one up in a horizontal line, alternating each one, so that I have space to branch them out later. If there are some steps that can be done at the same time, I'll put them on a level above or below the rest, stacking them like you see in the fourth column. Notice that this example focuses on "Release public beta" as the final step, when really that's just the beginning. I could have taken this all the way to the end (which I actually did a year ago when I started this project!), but what I discovered is that it's easy for me to get lost at the start if the journey is too far away. So I chose to map out just what's directly in front of me. ![[Action Map - Miro (2).jpg]] You can get as creative as you want with this, but you don't have to. Also, keep in mind that simple is good. We're going to add to this map as we go. [I've mapped my route](3a%20Define%20your%20resources%20and%20potential%20obstacles.md) | [I need help](I%20need%20help.md)
