# Frontends I am not a tech person, so my layman's terms might be inaccurate, and I won't even try to explain the magic that is happening between the frontend, the AI, and a character card. There are several options for frontends. Some are programs that you download and use locally on your device. Or you can choose one of the many character card websites. Both options have their pros and cons. Websites are flexible, you just need your account, and then you can use them with every device. Also, you don't need to set stuff up on your own, it's all handled by the site. But then, you're dependent on that site to continue working the way you are used to. Site policies can change, for example. I've seen two sites that I loved to use at one point change to be completely unusable to me, for different reasons. https://xoul.ai is a really nice chatbot site that I personally recommend. It's very community-oriented, and it's one of the very few sites where you won't immediately be hit by tons of furry porn. It's relatively easy to navigate with a nice UI that reminds of c.ai back in the day, but more advanced. The same goes for the chat experience. It does its job of providing a chat experience with a single character well, but it also allows for more advanced, story-like setups with multiple characters or a base scenario to follow. It also offers image generation with a very nice selection of image models. The free tier is somewhat limited. It works with a daily limit for text generation, but it also rewards regular users. You can expand your limit by logging in daily, and, after 30 days, you'll unlock unlimited energy. So, sticking to this site will benefit you in the long run. When not using Xoul, I personally prefer local programs. Here, SillyTavern is the king. It already has amazing customizability out of the box, and with user-created extensions, there's no limit to what you can do. But this comes with a steeper learning curve, also in general, you are bound to the device you're running it on. Find SillyTavern here: https://docs.sillytavern.app/ Be sure to follow their installation guide! There is also another option, Serene Pub. It's meant to be a "beginner" SillyTavern, a local frontend that just does its job of providing chats with character cards, without all the overwhelming settings or the difficult installation process. Find it here: https://github.com/doolijb/serene-pub After choosing a program or a site, you'll need access to an [[LLM]]. Most sites offer free options, but you might want to look into other options as well because of the higher quality.
