# Discussion Topic ## The Truth About Andrew Huberman - YouTube URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYlwG-ZVx5A --- # My Review ## Current information - neuroscientist - neuro biology at Stanford - go-to guy for young men ## Adolescent Background - father as a physicist - close relationship with science - obsessed with animals - 12-13 yrs old divorced parents - no longer safe home - mother depressed - neglected child - daily trauma environment - lost and adrift, flocked to the streets - skateboarding - stopped paying attention to school - parentless pack of kids - stopped returning home and missing school - drifted away from academics - taken away from this environment cued by school system - detained for 1 month - lack of enthusiasm from academics - shift in school didn't help - went to UC Santa Barbara to be with GF ## Key Experiences - 1994 July 4th - physical altercation during theft robbery fight - "i'm officially a loser" - delivering bagels, hate job and boss - "i'm gonna end up dead or in jail" - moment of deep reflection - wrote letter to his mom - "this is it, i'm turning it around and do the work" - absolute machine - coffee - work out - study - monk like discipline - became straight-A student - memorize and rewrite material over and over again - re-ignited for science by professor/mentor he connected with - turned on by the world of neuroscience - "i want to be like this guy and understand the mind" - "i had been through my own thing" - depressed, angry, seeking, desire to figure it out and change - plan to get PHD and be like the professor ## The Grind - education was the capability of understanding the world around him - tenured at Stanford - 43 years old - catapult to fame by a friend - "what are you gonna do to serve the world" in 2019 - teach everyone about the brain - found his voice in the internet after the rocky start (a necessary phase) - covid hit and wanted to help the public to reduce misinformation - someone needs to step up - podcasting started in 2020 - high profile podcasting guest - helped complex science world to actionable simple things - The Huberman Lab podcast - became "the guy" people would go to to learn about science ## Final Takeaway - his story is non-linear and involves rediscovery of passion - ability to find direction in the midst of chaos - our past doesnt define us - desire to learn and grow does - what are you gonna have done when the lights go out --- # My Reflection - this is the type of background story i was hoping for - it is genuinely a story of overcoming the odds and becoming the "best" version of yourself, not for other people but for yourself and whatever that means for you - for him it seemed like the answer was to go to his home roots of science and academia pre-divorce, what he may regard as a healthy state of being - driven by his past experiences - he wanted to understand his own mind and why he might've gone through the things that he did go through - during this exploration of science and self-knowledge development, he was **challenged by a friend** to impact the world in 2019, which became why he started to put out information and insert himself into the online space - all of which was AFTER his academic grind - currently, he is likely going to continue his run of internet fame and knowledge sharing until HE feels he needs to change what he is doing - similar to the #celebrities/jimcarrey story, becoming famous and getting everything you want in life is the answer to learning that getting all those things is not the answer to life - there might be a time when "the lights go out" on his desire to knowledge share and want to extend his conscious days in another direction away from the camera - no matter if that is the case, he will have left behind so much influential work that future generations can and will use to learn about themselves either before or after their own hard life experiences that drive them to want to learn about themselves - a note about myself - i feel like im at the stage or moment similar to his story where he made a promise and wrote a letter to his mom that things were going to change - he found his calling and passion after that - the academics of psychology is the first area of scientific study that interests me in understanding myself and my brain - the field of neuroscience and biology is also heavily intertwined with psychology because chemicals and communication systems in the brain are ultimately what allow us to create the psychologic space we hold in our conscious and unconscious - with the work Huberman has done, along with Carl Jung and other fundamental psychology and neuroscience authors and scientists - i believe there is a lot of base knowledge i should familiarize myself with if I want to be on the "cutting edge" of today's understanding of the mind - the cost of X-amount of years to learn of and reflect on the previous learnings is worth the amount of years I will be able to push that research and development forward - why? because this basic pre-entry level knowledge and self-guided deep reflection and enteroception has me feeling a strong connection with human psychology, as if that is where my purpose and academic belonging is (compared to the many other sciences out there, which other people might have a similar feeling/calling towards) - is this the realization people go through to want to work towards a PhD? #questions --- # Metadata **Tags**:: #discussions **Links**:: [[New Discussion]] [[Projects/discussions/To Do|To Do]] [[2023-12-11]] **Source**:: YouTube Status:: #complete
