## 2025-02-07 I'm not a true crime guy but this was pretty gripping because it's like the inverse of true crime. For those who don't know, Sherri Papini was a white woman who pretended to be kidnapped for like, 22 days, causing a nation-wide panic and search. She got bored after those 22 days, showed back up to the public, claimed that she was kidnapped by two Mexican women, and was eventually revealed to be a fraud. Sherri Papini going out of her way to turn into a fake kidnapping victim for clout is like, peak true crime lover shit. Her weirdness is an interesting parallel to [[Red Rooms]]' commentary on true crime. As a documentary it's pretty good. I like that it really hones in on Papini being a weird, virulent fucking racist and how her actions impacted the Latino community in her area. It covers everything that I think needs covering in this story, and you get to hear from her husband, who was the presumed murderer for a very, very long time when this case was ongoing. But I really don't think it needed to be 3 episodes. It starts off way too slow, at least for me as someone who already knows the story. It also has some weird editing decisions, with creepy dolls and this weird robot voice that's used to read passages from Papini's journal.[^1] Also, we get some unreal new information about Papini at the very end of the documentary that I feel needs to be followed up on? Like holy shit? Anyways yeah good summary for anyone who doesn't know the story.
