# First-order cybernetics

## Short definition
First-order cybernetics is the cybernetics of observed systems — the study of feedback, control and communication in a system from the position of an observer standing outside it, describing how the system regulates itself.
## Expanded definition
First-order cybernetics is the original form of cybernetics, developed from the 1940s by [[Norbert Wiener]] and colleagues at the Macy Conferences (1946–1953), alongside figures including John von Neumann, Claude Shannon, Warren McCulloch, Margaret Mead and [[Gregory Bateson]]. Its central concern is feedback: how a system — mechanical, biological or social — regulates itself towards a goal or stable state (a thermostat, a nervous reflex, a family maintaining its habitual pattern) through loops of information about its own output.
In systemic therapy, first-order cybernetic thinking treats the family as a [[System]] to be observed and understood from outside: the therapist identifies the [[Feedback]] loops, the [[Homeostasis]] the family maintains, and the [[Circular causality]] connecting its members' behaviour — then intervenes to disturb that pattern. Early family therapy, including the Palo Alto/[[MRI Brief Therapy]] tradition and much of [[Strategic]] practice, was built on essentially first-order cybernetic assumptions: the therapist as an outside observer diagnosing and perturbing a system's pattern.
This was later distinguished from, and partly superseded by, [[Second-order cybernetics]] — [[Heinz von Foerster]]'s recognition that the observer is never actually outside the system being observed.
## Why this concept matters
Recognising first-order cybernetics as a distinct historical and theoretical position — rather than simply "how systemic therapy works" — helps a practitioner notice when they are treating themselves as a neutral, external observer, and clarifies exactly what second-order cybernetics later corrected.
## Non-clinical example
An engineer studying a thermostat's feedback loop, observing input and output from outside the system, is doing classic first-order cybernetics — the engineer's own presence is assumed not to affect the thermostat's behaviour.
## Clinical example
A therapist maps a family's argument cycle — parental anxiety, repeated questioning, the young person's withdrawal, increased parental anxiety — as an outside observer identifying the loop, then designs an intervention to disturb it. This is first-order cybernetic formulation: the pattern is treated as existing independently of the therapist's own observation of it.
## Core insight
First-order cybernetics studies systems as if the observer stands outside them — a powerful and still useful lens, but one whose central limitation (the observer is never truly outside) is exactly what second-order cybernetics later named.
