# Godzilla Ficlets Binding
![[BannerBinding.png]]
So, my next project.
I’ve done a little typesetting, playing with some fonts and then did some chapter cover illustrations (the dorsal spikes of the Godzilla features in the ficlets).
I’ll be going for a Japanese stab binding. It fits the country of origin and it also allows me to easily add new pages, should I write more Godzilla ficlets.
## Godzilla 0.1

![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding94.png)
Grrrrrrrr. Smeared letters and the section names are barely readible.
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding95.png)
Aaaand, it turns out somehow the test print is larger than the actual print. And thinking about it now, I can see how that got shrunken. I also used the test print to measure the cover boards, which are now too big. So I cut new ones and will keep those for some other project.

Bookcloth preparations!
Sadly, the paper I bought to use as bookcloth ripped is so thin, it ripped when I tried to attach it to the patterned cloth. (That’s now been rinsed of glue remnants and drying.)
When I wanted to at least get the red cloth glued, the paper ripped when I tried lifting it… So, back to normal paper. I hope it works out. With the paper bigger than during the test run, it seems to have already dried considerable when I put it on the cloth.

---
Yesterday, I finished the bookcloth.

![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding101.png)
After three attempts in which the paper ripped again and again… There seem to also be no air bubbles hiding. 🎉
Thus, it was time to glue the back cover!
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding102.png)
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding103.png)
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding104.png)
I still haven’t found an easy way to get the right distance to cut off the corners.
Today, it’s been time to glue the inside.
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding106.png)

Bendy!
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding108.png)
Aaand… The endpaper got glue onto the wrong side and is sitting crooked again. At the moment, it’s drying and I hope it’ll straighten out the board again.
---
The endpaper has dried, and the board seems mostly straight.
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding109.png)
You can see the loos threads beneath. So, in future projects, I better use thicker paper…
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding110.png)
Quite the open corner. Still need to get a good feeling for how far away from the corner to cut. This was 1 time the board’s thickness. I guess for the front cover, I’ll attempt twice the thickness.
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding111.png)
Mr Gurkenstein found a new friend. Here they’re waiting for the front covers to dry.
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding112.png)
Front covers have dried. Look at how I marked which way the spine piece should go. Because when Mum used that cloth to make a belt for me, we didn’t pay attention to the direction and it ended up upside down. That’s not gonna happen, right? _Right?_
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding113.png)
AAAARGJKJKGHGGGKKLLLLL! I’ll just change the layout a bit, reprint and pretend I wanted to do the Japanese reading direction to begin with.
---
Remember when I cut the cover boards using a one-page test print for measures and then did something to the printer settings so the actual pages came out too small for the boards? The reprint came out in the size of the first boards…
I managed to retrace the other printer settings and re-reprinted in the size of cover boards that are mostly finished. However, I did order some heat'n'bond before starting bookcloth experiments with glue and that's still incoming. I had planned to see if the thin paper I got for bookclothing works well with heat'n'bond so… We'll once again have two version of a bind. :P
I also had wanted to do the tortoise shell variant and with the smaller boards, I don't think I've got enough space. So, I hopefully will be able to attempt it with the bigger version.
Also, apart from changing the alignment to give the bound part enough space, I also tweaked the section names, that had been almost non-readible to be a little bigger and also gave the Godzilla title and the content title a little texture.
It's not all bad, I tell myself. More practise chances.
---
I’ve finished the small version!
And of course, the first thread was too short, the second thread was right, but I picked the wrong section to go through so I couldn’t thread the needly back into the tight and stiff boards and had to redo the whole bind…
But yeah! Noble Binding done, too. Now I gotta wait for next week until the Heat’n’Bond arrives.

PUNCHY HOLEY TIME!
I’ve used one of the old prints to create the punching jig.
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding115.png)
Tied the knot, of course with scratching the paper while navigating the needle outside.
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding116.png)
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding117.png)
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding118.png)
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding119.png)
This gap shouldn’t have been there. Must have missed it when changing fonts. I may or may not reprint the bigger page. Not sure yet.
The chapter titles:
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding121.png)
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding122.png)
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding120.png)
I had to actually come up with titles for the first two, because they’re just running as _Godzilla Ficlets Chapter One_ and _Godzilla Ficlets Chapter Two_ on Ao3…
## Godzilla 1.0
With the Heat’n’Bond having arrived and a test run looking good, I’ve now made bookcloth with the thin paper.
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding123.png)
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Binding124.png)
The cloth is thinner, which shall be nicer when working with it. I can also _see_ the pattern so upside-down glueing *hopefully* won’t happen.
## Finished!
Long time no pictures, but I’ve finished the second book. And I wonder what’s wrong with my spatial perception. I double triple quadruple checked, was really optimistic and glued a nice endpaper to the red end cover.
Guess what I noticed then? I tell you, that cloth is cursed or out to get me.
So, now, the only way to have the fans facing upwards, is to use them as the end board, which also means, the endpapers of the red part are upside down. Ah well, the crane’s head will become invisible once I’ve stitched everything. Just glue the fan boards correctly.
Or not. Just keep all the endpapers upside down…
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Binding125.png)
You can spot my block of bees wax hiding behind the big book. I’ve melted a few smaller candles. Before, they were too slim to comfortable wax my thread, now it’s a little too big.
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Binding126.png)
Tortoise Shell and Noble Binding! (I should learn the Japanese terms…)
The tortoise shell also marks the first time, I did not need to redo the binding for some reason.
![img](https://www.kaijudogs.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Binding127.png)
A peak into the small book.

Upside down cranes.

Bendy covers are bendy.
Next up, I might have a go at the Fire Chronicles before daring to approach someone else's creations. Is there a way to do bookmarks with the Secret Belgian stitch?
