## "I Can Do" Coaching Method One of the most useful coaching models is the "I-CAN-DO" mnemonic. > I: Investigate what is so important to the client that they decided to hire you? > C: What is the *current* life situation? - This is confronting reality. > A: What are the aims in life? > N: What is the number of alternative ways of achieving those aims? > D: By what date will the aims be achieved? > O: What outcomes are expected?[^1] The mnemonic is a perfect fit for the ideal mental approach that your clients should work towards. This sets the frame in a client’s mind that the responsibility for the achievement and success comes from them rather than from me. # Investigate means that the client is tasked to investigating what is important to them, but also how I might serve them as a coach. Ask the coachee to email me what they come up with as a result of the soul searching process. This begins the process of the client taking ownership for results. # Current Reality Confront your current reality - honestly. Unless you know where you are, a map is of no use. When driving on the Interstate, every rest stop has a map with a red arrow and the words, “you are here.” You cannot know where you need to go, until you know where you are.” # Aims Where do you want to go? | Topic | Hours per week | Current status | Future Aims | |:------------- :|:--------------:|:--------------:| :-----------:| ||||| |Health | | | | | Wealth | | | | | Family | | | | | Relationships | | | | | Purpose | | | | | Spiritual | | | | | Career | | | | | Fun | | | | ![[3 Resources/PDF/_ Smarter Goals Personal Assessment Playbook 2023.pdf]] ___ # Number What are various ways to approach the aim? # Date When is the deadline for completion. >Duke Ellington, "A goal is a dream with a finish line." # Outcome What does your "win" look like? Here is an example of coaching someone who wants to lose weight: I: What is your reason for wanting to lose some weight? (Investigate). C: What is your current weight? (Current). A: Exactly what weight do you want to be? (Aims). N: What are the successful methods of weight loss you have heard about or experienced? (Number). D: By what date do you want to be your ideal weight? (Date) O: How will you know you have succeeded? (Outcome). [^3]. I always like to encourage people to celebrate when a goal has been achieved, so they aren't just focusing on the next hill to climb. That's it for now. God's best to you! Be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to be notified when the next video arrives. [^1]: Martin, Curly. The Life Coaching Handbook (pp. 59-60).
