Jacob had vowed to return ten percent to God of all the prosperity that might come to him in future years. God had not required this vow. It was given freely. Yet, He recalls and confirms that vow and, by implication, His pleasure in blessing Jacob richly. This blessing is also given freely.
Did God prosper Jacob because he had made the vow? Never. Jacob may have calculated a return on investment, but God needs nothing back from Jacob. Still, was God pleased by Jacob’s vow? Evidently.
