*"Let me go over"* or, as the phrase seemed to mean, *"Let me shibboleth."* But the dialect of the Ephraimites prevented them from giving the password of life.
This was most fitting, since the Ephraimites had challenged the Gileadites this way: *“Why did you shibboleth (pass over) to fight against the children of Ammon."*
The implicit answer must have been, "because we had been given the divine password."
