# What is Rogue History Notes? ![[30-39 Media/31 Images/31.70 ObsidianImages/Nodes.jpeg]] Rogue History Notes (RHN) is an Open-Access Notebook (OAN) for my dissertation research notes ([[61.02 Dissertation Proposal| A Tetarteron for Your Thoughts]]), experiments, queries, and musings, all documented in a durable plain text format called Markdown (.md). The OAN project is designed to promote *[[18.14 Generous Thinking]]* and collaborative research in [[90.05 East Roman Studies|East Roman Studies]], Public History, Digital Humanities, and beyond. Moreover, the project is a multidisciplinary undertaking that intends to highlight **_process_** as Digital Public History.[^1] The notebook uses [[17.00 Obsidian.md Index|Obsidian.md]] and [Obsidian Publish](https://obsidian.md/publish) to publish my scholarly research for academic and public access and engagement. Obsidian.md is a free, community-driven program for [[90.16 Personal Knowledge Management|Personal Knowledge Management]] (PKM), while its publishing feature is a paid service. Transparent *processes* are an integral part of my research. Process implies a movement towards a direction(s): "a systematic series of actions directed to some end" ([ Dictionary.com](https://www.dictionary.com/browse/process)).[^2] But in the Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines, many research processes are hidden or convoluted; sometimes they reach an undesired endpoint, or never reach an end.[^3] I aim to disrupt some of these processes in [[90.05 East Roman Studies]] and un-muddy the waters in order to promote a more open dialogue where the public and scholarly communities collaborate to challenge traditional historical narratives and promote new forms of historical knowledge production and meaning-making. No scholarly output is isolated or singularly built upon itself.[^4] All intellectual work depends on and builds off other scholarly and [[public(s)]] research. Acknowledging all academic and public work to which my research is indebted is a central tenet of my dissertation's publication. Moreover, acknowledging my position and expressing gratitude for conducting this research on the traditional and unceded territories of Indigenous peoples must be recognized first and foremost. This is not a finished thesis—it’s a living digital notebook. A window into how I think with sources, not just about them. In other words, knowledge production is not a linear nor static process. It is a web of interconnected ideas, thoughts, and meaning-making that is ever-shifting and continually evolving. Thus, items within the OAN will transform as my research progresses, possibly relocating within the site itself.
