Status:: Finished ([[sunset]]) Here are some behind the scene photos of the sunset collection. ### mugs The first photo below is how the mugs looked like taken off the wheel. They were made using Mac's Mud Brick red. Each mug is made out of 450gr of clay. After taken off the wheel they are left to get to a leather hard stage (soft, but not too firm). This can take a day or two. Then they are trimmed to tidy up mainly the bottom part. After that handles are pulled, and attached. The second photo is after the handles were attached and the sun has been painted on using three colours from Kiwi Underglaze, and a slip of a lighter colour brushed on. ![[sunset mugs off the wheel.jpeg]] ![[sunset mugs bone dry.jpeg]] ### matcha bowls The matcha bowls were also made out of Mac's Mud Brick Red clay. These were formed using 650gr of clay. After trimming, a cross pattern was carved inside. This creates grooves that help whisking the matcha powder into a smooth paste. ![[carving bowl.mp4]] The first photo below is how the bowls look at the bone dry stage before the bisque firing. The second one is how I stacked them in my small kiln with the [[sakura]] cups inside the bowls, and one of the [[breakfast bowls]] in the middle (upside down). At this stage the pieces can touch each other and stacked inside each other, maximising the small kiln space. ![[matcha bowl bisqued.jpeg]] ![[matcha bowls in kiln.jpeg]] ### in the kiln Here you can see one bowl and four mugs in the kiln before a glaze firing. The pieces have been dipped in clear glaze. It looks like they are covered completely in white. But at 1200 C, the glaze melts and becomes clear. ![[sunset in kiln.jpeg]] I will try to remember to take photos of each stage as the change can be staggering. After these were bisque fired, they turned salmon colour and you can hardly see the swish of the slip or the sun. But after they were dipped in clear glaze then fired to 1200 C the colour of the clay completely darkens.
