Name: Avery Mackenzie HobbsÂ
Age: 29 in 2048, born 2019
Gender: AMAB (He/They)
Sexuality: Asexual, Demiromantic
Height: 6' 3", standing straight. Typically seated in his chair or hunched/leaning with crutches.
Weight: ~150
Appearance: Gaunt looking with a frame that is covered in many blankets and sweaters at any given time. Has long brown hair that is often braided, tied up, or in a clip to keep it easy to manage. Wears wheelchair gloves and often has at least one of his two crutches with him at any given time. At times will try to dress up nice but struggles with clothes that are long or catch in the wheels of his chair.
Background: Avery was born appearing to be underweight; doctors panic when he is not breathing immediately, but are able to produce movement and life after a few moments. Janet, his mother, and Richard, his father, end up being carriers for Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) and he is diagnosed with such after he begins having major difficulties walking in daycare. His doctor recommends walking as long as possible as long as pain is not present and Avery is given a pair of forearm crutches to assist with ambulation.
His early childhood is filled with doctor's visits in which Avery is constantly exposed to long waits; in this time he asks for books to read. His father, a lifelong Episcopalian, gives him a bible and informs him that it is one of humanity's longest epic novels. Not all of it is completely dull; neighbors tend to treat him well including Mr. Crumb who allows for Avery to swim in his saltwater pool as a form of low-impact training. His school life is minorly impacted, as his parents emphasize the importance of him receiving a good education. He finishes high school during The Collapse, and despite difficult circumstances, he is accepted into Cal Poly Technic in town on a scholarship. Before entering college Avery is advised to switch to a wheelchair for the majority of his movement due to the progression of muscular atrophy and control in his legs; he is able to continue using crutches to transfer from his chair and for short distances, but switches to a hybrid manual-assistive motor wheelchair for daily movement. He continues to fight against arm mass loss and is able to have much success with using his crutches when his arms are in good shape.
He takes the opportunity to study anthropology and takes a minor in theology, even at one point considering switching to theology as a major before considering his ability to use his credits elsewhere one day. (He likely doesn't understand the sheer scale of The Collapse.) He instead finishes out with a master's and now patiently await the day the position he has been considered for opens up.
In his waiting, Avery is unfortunate to lose his parents to some form of illness. Having planned from day one on what they would do when it was their time they leave behind instructions for Avery's use and enough money to last him the rest of his life; both parents ensure that all medical professionals are alerted to their imminent passing. Now alone for the first time ever Avery is trying to learn what he should and can do for himself. He begins a website as a hobby project to try and find friends and people of similar interests as him.
Personality: Due to his circumstances in life, especially after his parents' passing, Avery is known for his somewhat morbid and dry sense of humor. He is quiet in most new situations but opens up one on one; he claims it's due to throat muscular issues but is truly due to losing his courage in crowds. He is completely different online, often being seen as outgoing and loud. He takes meticulous care of himself and has an attention for detail. His hobbies outside of his website and regular forum moderating involve models, small crafts, and detailed painting work.
