A _Metal-semiconductor junction_ is any structure where a [metal](Metals) comes into physical contact with a [semiconductor.](Semiconductors) Depending on the particular [Fermi energies](Fermi%20energy) of the metal and semiconductor as well as on the [valence band](Valence%20bands) and [conduction band](conduction%20bands.md) of the semiconductor. If this junction is [rectifying](rectifying%20junctions) (meaning that blocks the flow of current in one direction) that means it acts as a [Schottky-diode.](Schottky-diode) if it is [non-rectifying](non-rectifying%20junctions) it acts as an [[Ohmic contact]].
