# [[Abishai]]
### **Origins**:
- Each **[[Abishai]]** was once a mortal who won **[[Tiamat]]s favor** before death.
- As a reward, their soul was transformed into a **devil** to serve her in the **Nine Hells**.
---
### **Role and Purpose**:
- **[[Tiamat]]** uses abishais as **emissaries** to represent her interests both in the Hells and across the **multiverse**.
- Abishais are tasked with a variety of missions:
- Delivering messages to cultists.
- Leading **worshipers** to carry out sensitive missions.
- Leading large groups, **assassinating** targets, and serving in **armies**.
- They are **fanatically loyal** to [[Tiamat]], willing to **sacrifice their lives** to fulfill her will.
---
### **Hierarchy**:
- Abishais exist **outside the normal hierarchy** of the Nine Hells, with their own chain of command.
- They ultimately answer to **[[Tiamat]]** and, in some cases, **[[Asmodeus]]**.
- Though other archdevils can command abishais, they often avoid doing so due to the uncertainty of whether an [[Abishai]] is following **[[Tiamat]]s** or **[[Asmodeus]]s** orders.
---
### **Scholarly Theories**:
- [[Tiamat]] is a being of **Chaos**, yet she is **imprisoned in [[Avernus]]**, a plane of **Law**.
- Some scholars suggest that the abishais might serve as a means by which **[[Asmodeus]]** limits [[Tiamat]]'s chaotic influence on the Nine Hells, rather than being **true servants** solely bound to her will.
---
### Related Entities:
- **[[Tiamat]]**: Dragon goddess of chaos and the primary master of the [[Abishai]].
- **[[Asmodeus]]**: Lord of the Nine Hells, whose influence over the [[Abishai]] may act as a check on [[Tiamat]]'s chaotic nature.
