# [[Legend Lore]]
[[Lolth]] was formerly Araushnee, the lesser elven goddess of destiny and artisans. She was [[Corellon Larethian]]'s consort, and the main goddess of the dark elves. They had twins together, the elder Vhaeraun, the younger Eilistraee. At some point, Araushnee grew ambitious and started to plot against Corellon. She aided [[Gruumsh]], Malar, and Ghaunadar in attacks against Corellon, and when her intricate weave of deception failed to overthrow the elven deity, she was banished to the [[Abyss]] as a tanar'ri (evil souls that are warped by the chaotic nature of the [[Abyss]] - the primary race of demons).
After her exile, Araushnee took the name "[[Lolth]]". She conquered the 66th layer of the [[Abyss]], the Demonweb Pits, for herself. After securing control over her layer, she plotted to exact vengeance against Corellon. Being unable to directly strike at him, she planned to be worshiped as a goddess by the elves, bringing misery to them and therefore to their "father."
**The Church of [[Lolth]]**
The main principle of the church and its priestesses is to punish all who would disobey the word of [[Lolth]] and her faith.
"Love? What is love, or respect? Bah! Soft, useless feelings that none can lean on. Fear, now fear is as strong as steel, and can be leaned upon. I want to be feared."
The words of a priestess of [[Lolth]] that became one of the creeds of [[Lolth]]'s church.
Priestesses honor the Spider Queen by conducting rituals, leading sacrifices and spreading the faith. Sacrifices of surface elves would occur monthly, usually during a full moon as a direct insult to the elven deity Sehanine Moonbow.
Other rituals included summoning [[Yochlol]] (lesser demons) to gather information or aid.
**Additional information provided by Archie's use of the [[Wanderer's Book]]:**
[[Lolth]] is a demon lord and a goddess worshipped by the drow . She displays formidable power and great cruelty with an affection for arachnids. Goddess of Darkness, Drow, Evil, and Spiders, [[Lolth]] has, through deceit and domination, garnered the ears of the dark elves and eventually established herself as their foremost deity, keeping them under her thumb by creating a society in which only the strong survive and her priestesses are strongest.
[[Lolth]] has sworn vengeance against [[Corellon Larethian]] and his people. She has her own rivalries with the various demon lords of the [[Abyss]], noticeably with Zuggtmoy, the Demoness Lady of Fungi. However, [[Lolth]]'s re-ascension to true godhood has basically elevated her above competition from the Lady of Fungi, but the two still harbor hatred for one another.
