Well known #antivaxxer. He's been tapped by [[Robert F. Kennedy Jr.|RFKJr]] to run a study on the connection between vaccines and autism. He was disciplined in Maryland for 'practicing medicine without a license.'[^1]
In 2010 Geier was disciplined by the Maryland Board of Physicians for practicing medicine without a license. This came about because of the investigations of the parent of one of the patients Geier had 'treated' at David Geier's father's clinic. The final order (See the order below, in [[#Other URLs]]) said that...
1. He never obtained a license to practice medicine.
2. He had not attended any medical school
3. He worked at his father's (Dr. Mark Geier , who is licensed) clinic which, according to David Geier 's CV) did work in evaluating and treating patients with autism, neurodevelopmental disorders and other chronic diseases and did genetic counseling.
In the various events complained about -- him and his father interviewing and treating various patients at his father's clinic, or, in several instances only David interviewing and taking notes -- David takes the lead in the interviews, using various autism rating diagnostic tools to assess the patient. At no time are the patients told of David's lack of training as a doctor. In several cases he did not sign or initial the Patient Interview form, but there is one case where the board finds it plausible that David forged his father's signature.[^2]
This patient was billed for these services, and various diagnostic tests were ordered, completed and paid for by the patient's insurance.
The board found that David was not a credible witness and that he had lied about his involvement on multiple occasions. Additionally, the board found that his father's testimony was 'misleading, evasive and implausible ...' and that 'the testimony of David Feier and Dr. Mark Geier contradicted each other and the documentary evidence.' At other times their testimony was 'self-contradictory'
The [[Autism Self Advocacy Network]] decried the appointment, saying of Geier ...
> In previous experiments on children by David Geier and his father Mark, they used a **fake Institutional Review Board made up of their own family members and business associates.** They **failed to disclose a financial conflict of interest**, and their study was [“riddled with basic flaws.”](https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/other/vaccine-skeptic-hired-to-head-federal-study-of-immunizations-and-autism/ar-AA1BEvp0) These methodological and ethical failures allowed them to claim their study proved a link between vaccines and autism when none existed. RFK Jr. clearly welcomed David Geier into HHS to repeat this misconduct in the upcoming HHS study, glorifying anti-vaccine conspiracy theories at the national level.
# Retracted papers
These are paper which Geier et al have published which have been retracted.
[# Vaccine skeptic hired to head federal study of immunizations and autism](https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/03/25/vaccine-skeptic-hhs-rfk-immunization-autism/)
> The journal Science and Engineering Ethics [retracted](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5705728/)[^3] a 2015 paper co-authored by the Geiers that contended public health officials have conflicts of interest in studying whether mercury exposure triggers autism. The journal cited errors and failures to disclose the authors’ own conflicts of interest, including the Geiers’ involvement in a mercury-free-drugs coalition.
Here is the retraction notice in full.
> Based on an assessment by the Editors, the Conflict of Interest statement of this article is inadequate because it fails to disclose conflicts of interest in addition to the declaration that “the authors have been involved in vaccine/biologic litigation.” In particular, Janet Kern is a board member of CONEM (Council for Nutritional and Environmental Medicine) and Geir Bjorklund is that organization’s founder and President. Mark Geier and David Geier do work under the auspices of the non-profit Institute for Chronic Illnesses, Inc. Lisa Sykes, Mark Geier and David Geier are officers of the Coalition for Mercury-free Drugs (CoMeD, Inc). Richard Deth is on the scientific advisory board of the National Autism Association. Brian Hooker is on the board of Focus for Health. James Love has been involved in amalgam litigation. Boyd Haley is involved in the development of a mercury-chelating agent. Some of the authors have a personal as well as a professional interest in autism. In addition, some authors are or have been involved in litigation related to vaccines and autism. Furthermore, the article itself contains a number of errors, and mistakes of various types that raise concerns about the validity of the conclusion. As a result, this article is being retracted by the editors without the agreement of the authors. The online version of this article contains the full text of the retracted article as electronic supplementary material.
