[[Super Paper Mario]] has a very deep story which can get very heavy at times, but also has a lot of moments of brightness to counter the really heavy plot. I'm keep track of all of these moments in particular. I'm not sure if the silly moments act as a bright spot for the serious bits or if it's the serious bits that stand out more because of the humor. I think it's the latter considering what takes place during Chapter 6.
I was born in 98, was 9 when this game came out, I wasn't a "90s kid" The way that the memes make it out to be, *cut to yiik* my childhood wasn't full of games like Lucia and chrono trigger, they involved renting games from video universe.
But why does it use humor? [[Super Paper Mario Uses Funny Moments to Make Serious Moments Hit MUCH Harder]]
# The Humor
- In General:
- The absurdity of each of the pixls. They just get progressively more outlandish, which I think is really funny because like, what else are they supposed to be?
- Slim being an absolute Bozo
- Thudley's: I'm throwin' around a lot of Girth here
- Carrie's takes on Francis
- Prologue
- "We're under attack!" in the opening amongst the cheers of Bowser's minions
- You can reject the call from Merlon and Game Over in the first 10 minutes of the game and then be forced to watch everything again
- Chapter 1
- Bestovius being a cheapskate and commenting about Merlon's mustache
- Fracktail being a walking meta humor example
- "I AM ERROR"
- Wii Shop loading Menu
- Falling asleep at the old person's story.
- Chapter 2
- All the prisoners hitting on Peach throughout the chapters
- Starting in a spooky haunted mansion and ending with a gameshow in the girl's bathroom in the basement maze
- The 66th's Annual "Who's my Merlee" in 2-4
- the graffiti in said basement bathrooms
- Also I kind of find it hilariously unnerving that they put a character like Mimi into this game in the first place, because it's such a ridiculously scary whiplash. It answers the question can horror be comedy with a resounding, "YES".
- Chapter 3
- The Koopa getting the Invincibility Star to turn giant, and then Mario turns giant and just steps on him to kill him. That's comedy.
- Literally all of Chapter 3-4, The Battle of Fort Francis
- Chapter 4
- "A Paper Emergency" gets the bathroom humor in there
- Guy buys a 7/11 in the middle of space, doesn't consider the consequences
- Chapter 5
- Jasperoid asking you to say Please five times
- Chapter 6
- Explicitly No funny business here
- Chapter 7
- Luvbi as an angsty teen who hurls a ton of quippy insults in Shakespearean English is generally amusing to me
- Doorguy 1
- Schmorange
- Doorguy 3 and the fight vs. Underchomp as a deconstruction of common RPG tropes, building on the Swoon.exe segment.
- Feeding Peach the Apples
- Cloud 69 baby :]
- Chapter 8
