# Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green Pitch

Console: Gameboy Advance
Approximate Main Story Length: 28 hours (can be mitigated in emulation)
# What are these Games?
[[Pokemon Fire Red]] and [[Pokemon Leaf Green]] are remakes of the original Pokemon Red and Green that kicked off the Pokemon craze. As the protagonist, you go through the Kanto region catching and raising your Pokemon while challenging the 8 Gym Leaders for their badges. Once you have all 8 Badges you can challenge the Elite Four at the Indigo Plateau for the chance to become the Champion!
While remakes of Generation 1, Fire Red and Leaf Green are part of Pokemon's third generation which takes place on the Gameboy Advance and has some of the modern convenience features including:
- a "Run" button,
- the inclusion of the Steel and Dark types which help balance out some otherwise difficult fights,
- and an entire set of new zones (the Sevii Islands) which are unique to these games.
Fire Red and Leaf Green restrict the player to the original 150 Pokemon available in the game, so the Pokemon choice is fairly limited compared to the now over 1,000 Pokemon selection in modern games, but no underwhelmingly so. Furthermore some Pokemon, like Ekans and Sandshrew, are exclusive to Fire Red and Leaf Green, which encourages interaction with folks who are playing the version you aren't playing!
Furthermore, these game are pretty short and linear compared to later Pokemon games, but still allow for a unique experience. They're a great starter Pokemon game that give you a feel for what early Pokemon was like and context into why it was such a huge draw.
# Why Should We Play Them?
- Pokemon is the largest media franchise EVER. Yes, bigger than any brand you might think of.
- By having two different versions of the same game, we can have notably distinct playthroughs in terms of the party we use, while still having a very similar story experience.
- Furthermore, with three different starters to choose from, there are plenty of combinations of usable Pokemon.
- The concept of Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green is pretty easy to understand and is easy to play while doing other things.
- They're nostalgic for me and I would like to share them with you all :]
# Potential Discussion Topics
- For those who have never played Pokemon:
- What have you found enjoyable?
- What are some aspects of this game have you found unenjoyable?
- How do Pokemon's mechanics translate to other JRPGs you might have played before?
- What are some of the easier / harder Pokemon to use on a team?
- How does the effect of having two copies of the same game make the experience fun or not fun for an individual versus for a group?
- What does it mean to play the same games in a group simultaneously?
- What are ways in which we can customize our playthroughs to make them easier / more challenging?
# Other Projects / Fun Things to do
- After we all finish the playthrough, we can take our in-game teams to Pokemon Showdown (a battle simulator) and have a small tournament amongst ourselves.
- Trading evolutions can be done with my (Voltage's) help, if needed.
