#index # Troxler Effect ![](https://www.illusionsindex.org/images/illusions/troxler/38_troxler_main.png) The Troxler Effect is what happens when one rigidly fixes their gaze on a specific point in their visual field. In this process stationary objects in their surroundings appear to disappear / fade [^1] . This space is then "replaced" with an experience which is determined by the background that the object is on, which is known as the process of "[[Filling-In]]". If the object is on a white background, the space is filled in with more White. If you are looking in a dark space, more darkness appears. There is also the controversial Neural [[Filling-In]], which is where the brain actively generates information which is triggered by the absence of information. [^1]: https://www.illusionsindex.org/i/troxler-effect This effect demonstrates the effects of [[Saccadic Eye Movements |saccades]]. If we perfectly fix our view on a point in our field of view without these movements or by suppressing the saccadic movement, the static scene would eventually fade. When we focus intently on a specific location or object, the eye undergoes extremely repaid and relatively large-scale movements know as microsaccades, which "refreshes the image" in the brain. In the image present of the cat, the high contrast teeth are more easily visualized than the face and eyes, which is the reslut of the microsaccades in action.
