#index #learning/technique See also: [[Zettelkasten]] # Leitner System The Leitner system is a method of using flashcards and the principle of [[Spaced Repetition is an effective way to develop knowledge and understanding|spaced repetition]] in order to develop conceptual understanding. ![](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/82/Leitner_system_alternative.svg/220px-Leitner_system_alternative.svg.png) Cards with questions or problem are sorted into bins of different tiers. If I were to solve the problem on the card, it would be moved into the next incremented bin. If I fail, the card is sent back to bin #1. This algorithm allows you to prioritize the parts of learning that you are struggling most with. For example, if you are querying up to bin 3, you'd take all the cards in bins 1 through 3, and practice. Any cards you solve correctly get moved into the next bin (so cards in 1 to go to 2, 2 go to 3, 3 stay where they are). Any cards you fail go back down to bin 1. Alternative methods are less punishing and instead just move the failed cards down one tier rather than putting them all the way back at the beginning again.
