# Quality Factor (Q)
Motivation: [[Radiation Dose]] baby
The quality factor, Q, is a dimensionless modifier used in converting absorbed dose [Gy or rad] to dose equivalent [Sv or rem]. This measures the biological effectiveness of different types radiation in varying organs [^1].

$H = QD

Where $H$ is the dose equivalent, $D$ is the absorbed dose, and $Q$ is the quality factor.
Heavier particles, like heavy charged particles ($\alpha$ particles for example) will have a larger $Q$ factor than say, x-rays or $\gamma$ rays.
