What are the driving factors? What are the pulling factors? - what drives people apart? - what connect people together? ### Dividers - Common dividers include, but are not limited to, current or past negative personal or group histories and relationships; traumatic events where one or more parties have been or believe they are likely to be harmed or to suffer in any way; lack of accurate data or misinformation; adversarial attitudes and behaviors; perceived or actual incompatibility of parties' needs and interests; competing values perceived to be mutually exclusive; significant differences between parties' means of influence to effect dispute resolution procedures or desired outcomes; and so forth. - ==beliefs about the other parties== - Dividers related to conflict drivers can be subdivided into major elements or contributing elements. Major elements, when linked to key drivers, fuel and make conflicts very hard to resolve. Key drivers are the major causes of conflicts. They encompass the most important differences in attitudes, behaviors, and goals of disputants. If they are not recognized and satisfactorily addressed, the resolution of the dispute may not be possible. ## Contributing elements - are factors that, though not a central or major factor in the cause of a dispute, do exacerbate differences between parties and make interactions and resolution more difficult, but not impossible. ==Examples of contributing causes include strained relationships between parties; their inability to listen to or talk directly with each other; and misperceptions, stereotypes, or misuse of a potentially effective dispute resolution process.== Generally, effective conflict management strategies are needed early in any dispute resolution process to help manage or address contributing causes of conflict so that they do not further damage parties' interactions and impede progress toward reaching understandings or agreements that address their major differences. ## Connectors - Connectors may include past or current positive elements in disputing parties' relationships and affirmative feelings toward one another, shared values, positive attitudes and behaviors, abilities of parties to speak in a nonadversarial manner and listen to each other, accurate and shared information, somewhat symmetrical if not similar forms of power and influence, and desires to refrain from actions that will harm the other party, and so forth. - Connectors are valuable factors to identify and have parties recognize and enhance as they are major resources to encourage cooperation and collaboration. *I think this is similar to therapist asking for "Exceptions", when are the good times, when are there no problems.. how was it like before there were problems?* # ==Emotional or Substantive Focuses of the Parties. ==Important to note, is where are the parties focus.. on their emotion aspect or the substantive issues in disputes. Often, they are no longer arguing about the issues, but emotional issues.== So i think this could be #language / "language game", when the parties are actually talking / focusing on different issues (Page 88) ## Issues, Needs, and Interests What is the "ideal" future? What's the needs of the parties.
