## Speaker: Harold (Hal) Wolf, Chief Executive Officer, HIMSS, USA

Summary:
- He explained the role of HIMSS as a thought leader, supporting partners in their digital transformation journey.
- It is not about data, unless we can turn it into useful information to build model to help patients.
- There is a need for digital transformation as there is a global shortage of skilled healthcare workers.
- Looking at healthcare, it is about looking out for “anomaly”; once an “anomaly” is detected, then resources can be put in to help that patient to move into the correct healthcare pathway.
- 40% of contributory factors is due to personal behavior (My thoughts: Sounds like we are blaming the patients for their illness if we are not careful, if we are not careful of systemic perspective).
- He shared that digital transformation is not going to be gradual improvement, he draw comparison of the invention of electricity light, “the electric light did no come from continuous improvement of candles”.
- He reminded the audience that “artificial intelligence is a tool, not a target”
- He talks about the “digital maturity framework” created by HIMSS and the countries/hospital that has adopted it such as Taiwan (National Health Insurance Agency), and Korea health information system.
- Lastly, he shared about “NT + OO = COO” - New Technology + Old Organisation = Costly Old Organisation. Simply adding new technology to old organisational structure without changes to processes will lead to inefficiency and high cost (I have checked, it is attributed to Leif Edvinsson, a Swedish Organisational Theorist known for his work on Intellectual capital. )
