# Book Note - The End of Burnout by Jonathan Malesic
#book #Burnt-out
What i have learnt from this book.
1. The definition of Burnt out is not well defined.
2. Historically, it has been named differently, and meaning of who will get burnt out.
3. Psychological research, on Burnt out
1. The three aspect of burnout
1. Exhaustions
2. Cynicism - depersonalised, seeing patients as a number
3. Personal ineffectiveness - feeling that you can't do your job anymore
2. A gap between ideals and actual work.
4. Burnout to be seen as a spectrum, and different combinations of factors.
5. Social-cultural causes of Burntout
1. Capitalism
1. Employee as asset now to liability.
2. More admin, bullshit job/tasks.. that is nothing to do with the actual work.
2. Work-Ethos - A noble lie
1. Work is a source of Dignity, Character and Purpose [[Book Self Under Siege]] [[Ernest Becker]]
2. Don't work don't eat.
3. No work then less respected.
4. Personal dignity come from work.
3. Protestant views
1. Work as a calling, vocation. To show that you are "good"
2. Saintly people are productive people.
4. Individualism
1. Dog eat Dog world. Survival of the fittest
5. Work used to be about survival, but somehow got transformed into work needing to give fulfilment.
1. Which is not possible.
6. Work Saints. Work Martyr
1. Those who cannot stop working, may be due to Ego, or fear that they can be replaced. The need to feel wanted, and needed.
2. Anxieties built in. To constantly have to live up to the standard that you are "good enough" and not to be replaced (This is a one way contract. Company got no obligation to you.) #anxiety [[Anxiety]]
3. Expectations of work become more, blurred with new lingos. #language E.g To be collaborative/participatory means you now take on more responsibilities.. more demand to your mind.
4. Work transform employee into the kind of work they do.
5. Used to be products, now moving into service industry.. WE become the product.. and we better don't be rejected.
1. The demand to use of self, to be engaged, personality and emotions but not allow to be "personal"
2. Company encourage worker to be more productive, get into "flow state", to be engaged that means demanding more but paying the same or less.
7. Examples of people outside of the world
1. Catholic Benedict monks
1. Prayer is 1st priority. Work is limited.
2. Restore dignity to human as rights.
1. Work must be dignified to match the person.
2. The work culture of putting human needs first.
3. Cultivate Hobbies/Interests. Work is to support that hobby or interest
4. We are all only temporarily abled, until we become old, or accident, then disabled.

The "Noble Lie" remind me of Ernest Becker concept of cultural "hero system", how it affect individual psychology.
