# maya materials
Maya has a set of default materials you can use to build a variety of basic surfaces. Options include Lambert, Blinn, and Phong, as well as others. This page is a breakdown of how those materials can be manipulated and tweaked.
Maya also ships with a completely different material system called [[materials - arnold|Arnold]] that works in a different way with more modern options and parameters. Either way, you will use the [[materials - hypershade editor|Hypershade Editor]] to tweak and refine the materials.
